William "Bill" C. Stevens

1923-2009

East Greenville Volunteer Fire Company honoring Bill's years of service.

Station flag at half-mast, and black mourning bunting draped over the Engine Room.

We regret to announce the death of William "Bill" Stevens this Friday August 21st, 2009.  Bill was a member of East Greenville Volunteer Fire Company (Montgomery County Station 38) for more than 55 years.   Bill retired a few years ago due to health concerns.  He held the rank of Fire Police Lieutenant at the time of his retirement.

William C. Stevens, 85, formerly of East Greenville, died August 21, 2009.  He was the husband of Betty (Smith) Stevens.  They were married 61 years this past February.  Born in Corning, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Della (Heistand) Stevens.  He was employed at the former Firestone Rubber Co., Pottstown, for 43 years.  After that, he was a crossing guard in East Greenville.  He was a member of New Goshenhoppen United Church of Christ, East Greenville Volunteer Fire Company, where he was a Fire Police Lieutenant, and the Upper Perkiomen Senior Citizens Center.  He began a youth bowling league at the fire house in the 1960s.

Survivors: Wife; son, William, and his wife, Terry, of Rockledge, Pennsylvania; grandchildren: Jessica, Cody, Rachael; brother, Harold and his wife, Thelma, of Irvine, California.

From all of us here at Sassamansville Fire Company, our deepest sympathies go out to the Stevens family and friends, and to the members of East Greenville Volunteer Fire Company.

On a personal note, as webmaster this duty is one of the hardest I have to perform, especially this particular time.  I am also Fire Police Captain here at Sassamansville.  I was a firefighter with East Greenville from 1996-2001.  At the end of 2001 for personal reasons I switched to Fire Police, I was sworn in and started as a Patrolman.  I continued to serve in a reserve capacity until 2006 when I came here to Sassamansville.  Bill Stevens was my mentor and taught me the duties and responsibilities of Fire Police.  He opened my eyes to the fact that Fire  Police are not just "flare flickers" or "speed bumps" as they are referred to by the "Hose Heads" or "Nozzle Nuts".  His entire life he helped others, he served his country in the Armed Forces, He served his community in the fire department, and as a sworn Fire Police officer he served his county, and state as well.

He will be missed.

Line Of Duty Death
