Sassamansville Fire CompanyProudly serving New Hanover Township & surrounding communities since 1949. We are physically located on Hoffmansville Road, between Erb Road & Kulps Road. * New Hanover Township * Montgomery County * Pennsylvania * Line of Duty Death AnnouncementFire Police Captain David Wintz(age: 65) of the Bristol Fire Company of Bucks County, Pennsylvania has answered his final alarm. The initial alarm was sounded shortly after 3:35AM on May 16, 2012 when lightning struck two chemical storage tanks at the Dow Chemical's Rohm and Haas Plant in Bristol, Pennsylvania. The two chemical storage tanks were holding ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, both of which are used in acrylic paints and coatings which quickly ignited and exploded creating a rapid escalation to a three-alarm blaze. While the task of firefighting was immense, the Fire Police had to create extensive road closures and detour routes including several major roadways in addition to assisting the Police with resident notifications and advising them of possible evacuations and other special instructions pursuant to Police requests. Bristol Fire Chief Herb Slack initially reported no one was injured from this incident, prior to his knowledge of this Line of Duty Death. David was feeling ill at the scene so he was taken to his home where he apparently realized that he had been suffering from a massive heart attack. He was taken to a nearby medical facility where he succumbed. David had been in the fire service for 50 years. We will repost with funeral and/or services details as soon as they become available...
